Lubeck has a rich cultural history. Its maritime past has perhaps had the most influence on the city. Its place on the Baltic Sea made it an important trading post and the town even bought other hamlets and villages like Travemunde in its historic past to make sure its sea routes were clear and safe. Historic sailing ships that have been lovingly restored by enthusiasts are berthed at Untertrave and make a fascinating destination. Some welcome visitors aboard to explore them more fully.

Lubeck's old town is full of small and cozy restaurants and cafes and traditional beer cellars can refresh visitors enjoying the many attractions of the shops. Brauberger is one of the oldest, serving ale brewed in the house itself among shining polished coppers. If the sheer array of unique shops becomes too much, several garden trails offer lovely walks through the Wallanlagen, or Ramparts Garden, the City Park which was once home to rich merchants and has particularly lush gardens to be enjoyed and the Carlebach Park. The city is extremely green and these are just some of the gardens and parks available to delight visitors.

Theater and music are very important to Lubeck and there are many places to enjoy them. From June to September the Open-Air Stage offers performances from concerts to open air cinema and is as popular with local residents as with tourists. The Music and Congress Center offers a varied musical program throughout the year from jazz to rock and pop, traditional German folk music to classical. The acoustics are famously good and big names often perform here. Puppetry is a famous German skill and this is celebrated in the Puppet Theater which is a museum as well as a performance theater.

Many restaurants and hotels serve traditional German food to the highest standards. Its coastal position means that fresh fish and seafood are widely available, as are traditional stews, potato, kale and cabbage dishes and hams. Portions are often large. The rich and hearty diet has sustained residents through the sometimes harsh weather for centuries. Street food is popular and traditional German sausage vendors offer cheap alternatives for those needing a pick me up. Bakeries selling traditional cakes and pretzels are vast in number and Lubeck has one of the highest bakery to populous ratios in Europe.
